Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day of May 18, in memory of those who lost their lives during the final phase of the conflict in 2009, was observed emotionally yesterday in several parts of the Northern Province.
Every year on May 18, relatives and members of the public pay tribute to those who died during the war in 2009.
As part of this remembrance, the main event — attended by tens of thousands of people — took place at the memorial site established in Mullivaikkal, in the Mullaitivu District.
The event began at 10:15 a.m. with the reading of a declaration of principles by Thavathiru Agathiyar Adigalar. At 10:29 a.m., a remembrance signal was sounded, followed by a moment of silence at 10:30 a.m. Afterwards, a flame was lit by a resident from Vattrappalai, and at the same time a single memorial flame was also lit.
